The Secondary School Scholarship Program
This Scholarship Charity set the foundation for the development of Equal Chance. Currently, we are receiving funds for these five scholarships, and will continue supporting these students for the next two years. We are also trying to raise funds to add new scholarships and to fund our other programs. These five students are all extraordinary people with exceptional talent and potential. They were also selected in part due to their voluntary and devoted membership in the Songornya United Youth Club, a youth theater group that performs and educates on HIV/AIDS and Sexual Health.

William Teye Ajumani
- Studying General Arts at DEKS Private Secondary School, Tema - Greater Accra Region
- 23 years old
- William's family lives in a tiny mud house without electricity on the outskirts of Adjumanikope. Due to the number of children in his family and the low income of William's parents, the only option open to William upon finishing middle school was to labor in the farm and salt mine. But William is a brilliant philosopher and poet, a meticulous actor, and a devoted social activist. His potential, when actualized, will undoubtedly lead him into a job working for positive social change in Ghana. He is now learning core subjects such as History, Geography, Literature, and Social Studies.
Seth Djorbua Agbofu
- Studying Business at DEKS Private Secondary School, Tema - Greater Accra Region
- 20 years old
- Seth's family is one of the poorest in his village, Bornikope. His father abuses alcohol and does not work, while his mother lives in a different region and sells medicinal herbs. Seth's family home is a tiny 3-room mud house. Seth is a natural leader and is the democratically elected President of the Songornya United Youth Club. He works for what he believes in despite external pressures. Seth's compass is his heart and his strength is his mind - he is brilliant as an organizer, a play-write, and an undeterred accountant. Seth's leadership ability is drawn from his apparent concern for others' well-being, and also his determination to accomplish what he has set out to do.
Judith Mansah Dogbey
- Studying Business at Sogakope Secondary School, Sogakope - Volta Region
- 17 years old
- Judith's family lives in Agbedrafor, a small and relatively undeveloped village. Judith's family are all farmers, and they invest all of their hope in her - she is very intelligent and talented. Judith's family however does not have much money. Judith needed to repeat her final year of middle school in order to try to score higher on the final exam, with the hope of receiving a government scholarship for Secondary School. When Judith has something to say, she says it. She often surprises everyone with her impromptu speeches to the youth after community theater performances. Her speeches generally revolve around the issues of knowing one's self worth and avoiding risky sexual behavior. Judith's self-confidence and achievements at such a young age truly inspire the young girls in Songornya, and evoke the pride of the adults.
Moses Adi Gedematu
- Studying Carpentry and Joinery at Comboni Vocational School, Sogakope - Volta Region
- 23 years old
- Moses has had a very challenging life. His father died when he was young, and his mother left him and his siblings to live with his grandmother in Nakomkope (adjacent to Songornya). Moses grew up in poverty. He was the only member of his family to attend primary and middle school, and this was due to his being sponsored by the local Presbyterian Church. After he graduated from middle school, Moses attempted to apprentice with a carpenter in a local town. One of his previous teachers gave him the fees for the apprenticeship, but Moses did not have any money to eat while he was there, so he had to return to his grandmother. Moses is possibly the most talented member of the Theater group. His singing, acting, and dancing ability and his command of an audience during a performance sets him apart from the other members. In addition to his extraordinary talent, Moses is extremely kind and is consistantly moved by the suffering of people around him living in poverty.
Manasseh Olertey Agbofu
- Studying General Arts at DEKS Private Secondary School, Tema - Greater Accra Region
- 23 years old
- Manasseh is the older brother of Seth, and he shares the same family situation. Manasseh, however, is the oldest brother in the family. When asked if he will go to Secondary School upon his graduating middle school, Manasseh said, Maybe Seth will go, I will work to make money so he can go. Despite Manasseh's hope to continue school, he was ready to sacrifice this for his brother. Manasseh did in fact work as a diver for a fish-farming company under very dangerous conditions for one year before this scholarship opportunity came. Manasseh is humble and hardworking. He and his brother come from the lowest end of poverty in Songornya, and it is the hope of Equal Chance that through this opportunity of attending Secondary School, they both will be qualified for better jobs, and will rise to positions of power where they can then help others to rise up.
